_ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. Why should I get my seaplane rating?
A. Here are several reasons:
1. Challenge yourself.
2. Sharpen your skills and broaden your experience level as a pilot.
3. Learn to read the environment around you.
4. Fullfill your required Flight Review and have fun while doing it!
5. Fly your own seaplane.
6. Have something on your FAA certificate that your friends will be jealous of.
7. Become a professional seaplane pilot.
8. Have more fun than you have ever had in an airplane.
9. Access remote locations unavailable to others.
10. Be part of an elite group of pilots that have experienced the thrill of landing on the water!
Q. How long does it take to complete the rating?
A. Our seaplane rating package includes 6 hours of flight time. Very rarley does it take a pilot more time than this but it is directly proportional to the pilots proficiency. Students typically break their time into 3-5 training sessions. Weather is also a factor which may contribute to the amount of time it takes to complete the rating. While the winter brings us with many days that limit our ability to fly, the summer provides fairly consistent weather which is ideal for seaplane flying.
Q. Can I rent a seaplane at Kenmore Air for solo flight?
A. Due to insurrance requirements, solo operations are not permitted at Kenmore Air. Our qualified instructors are always happy to go flying with you and enjoy the majestic environment of the Pacific Northwest. The price of instruction is included in the rate for every aircraft.
Q. Can I do my training in an aircraft other than the Piper Super Cub?
A. Due to the demand on our Cessna 180s and deHavilland Beavers, the seaplane rating package is usually only available in the Super Cub. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis, largely determined by the season. Call us for more information.
Q. Can Kenmore Air provide training in my own aircraft?
A. Kenmore Air is able to provide individual training for checkouts, flight review, and seaplane ratings in private aircraft with one of our highly experienced flight instructors. The aircraft must be in an airworthy condition and the owner must be able to provide maintenance records for inspection.
Q. Can Kenmore Air provide complex and high performance training?
A. Kenmore Air is able to provide training for both the complex and high performance endorsments in our Cessna 180s or Dehavilland Beavers. 14 CFR 91.31 States that a complex airplane in the case of a seaplane is one with a controllable pitch propeller, and flaps.
Q. I am a non-U.S. citizen with an FAA private (or commercial) certificate, do I need to recieve TSA clearance before training at Kenmore Air?
A. Because the seaplane add-on rating is not original issuance of a commercial, or private pilot certificate, TSA clearance is not required. All of our instructors have been through recurrent security awareness training required by the Transport Security Administration.
Q. What does it take to become a professional seaplane pilot?
A. Most seaplane operators require 200-500 hours of floatplane piloting experience in addition to part 135 minimums. The most practical way to build this time is to work as a flight instructor. Another popular option is to purchase a seaplane, or join a flying club which has a seaplane in its fleet. Very few seaplane operators are able to rent seaplane for solo operations due to insurance requirements.
