Make the most of your training time!
We think flying seaplanes is the most fun flying you can find.
----
The added rating can be accomplished in a relatively short amount of time compared to other ratings and certificates, but that does not mean it is "easy" or should be taken for granted.
----
So, study up, come prepared, and we'll meet you at the dock for the flight training experience of a lifetime!
----

We highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the basic concepts of float flying prior to your first session. The following is a list of recommended study materials, available at most pilot supply stores or the Kenmore Air Gift Shop.

The first text we suggest is the Seaplane Operations Handbook (FAA-H-8083-23). This authoritative handbook provides the private or commercial pilot the means for understanding the transition from wheels to floats--a must read before your rating.

During the first lesson, you will receive a copy of Edo’s “How to Fly Floats” and a Kenmore Flight Training Reference Packet specific to Kenmore Air’s aircraft and Standard Operating Procedures.

The training packet includes all of the information you will need regarding operating policies, aircraft systems and procedures, local traffic flow, and maneuver profiles.

Prior to your checkride,  familiarize yourself with the Areas of Operation specifically listed as Single-Engine-Sea (ASES) tasks in the Commercial Pilot - Airplane -  Airman Certification Standards (
FAA-S-ACS-7A),

This is the document by which your aeronautical knowledge and flying skills will be evaluated for your added-class rating. Even as a private pilot, when flying with us you will be trained to proficiency using Commercial Pilot maneuver standards. Don't fret, we'll get you there!

Outside of training, Greater Seattle Area locals and aviation enthusiasts alike will appreciate the history of Kenmore Air in our book titled "Success on the Step: Flying with Kenmore Air." by C. Marin Faure.

Copies of this book can be found on Amazon, or purchased in our Kenmore gift shop! Please tell Julie, customer service agent extraordinaire, that flight instruction sent you!

The FAA got involved in the float flying world with this training video titled "Flying Floats." Don't let the yesteryear narrator fool you into thinking the technical information is dated. There is much to be learned from analyzing the shots of seaplanes captured here. See what you can learn!

"When pilots talk about the fun of seaplane flying, many remember that special moment of liftoff to be the hook, line, and sinker that spurred them toward a seaplane rating."
